Cogitations e166: about Pharisees

Today's episode is based on a conversation I have had with a good friend of mine. This is wha he writes:
The following quote is from Everett Ferguson’s book Backgrounds of Early Christianity, “Much of the oral law developed in the Jewish law-courts as they interpreted and applied the law. Rabbis served as judges and trained and ordained disciples to carry on their interpretations. The interpretations placed a hedge or fence around the law, on the principle that if one does not break through the fence then he will not be able to break the law itself.”
What I found interesting was the last half of that quote. While I understand when brethren make the “slippery slope” argument, there was a group who was making that argument long before – and it was the Pharisees. When traditions (and not a thus says the Lord) become a fence around what God has said, individuals are traveling the same path as many of the Pharisees.
I hope you will listen to this podcast and think about the idea that what we learn from Jesus' dealing with the Pharisees is that we need to be careful and not become them.
