Cogitations e57: about courting vs dating

There is a book from back in the 90's that really promoted the idea of courting over the modern model of dating. My question is, was the colonial era and its tradition of courtship any more virtuous than out modern version of dating. Now I am not talking about hook-up culture. I am talking about the process of picking a mate. Obviously this hook-up culture that has sprang up is sinful and wrong. It is definitely no way to pick a mate. However, what is asserted by the proponents of courtship over dating is that courtship during the colonial days was of such higher moral fabric and virtue that we should adopt it today. My contention is that we romanticize yesteryear and that courtship is no more virtuous than our modern model of dating when it comes to picking a mate. We should go back to the Bible.
