The topic of beverage alcohol for social consumption is a hot topic and much debated...well, everywhere. I have had occasion to revisit this topic lately and wanted to share some of my thoughts on the phrase Paul uses in the list of prerequisites for deacons. Let me know what you think. It is my desire that you are informed and encouraged.

NIEHS: ”All substances have the potential to be toxic if given to humans and other living organisms in certain conditions and at certain doses or levels. For example, one or two aspirins may be good for you, but taking a bottle of aspirin may be harmful. The field of toxicology tries to understand and identify at what dose and through what exposure a substance poses a hazard.” The point is that things are not simply ”toxins.” They become toxic based on dose and other factors.

The Bible wasn’t written in our common parlance. It was written in the common parlance of 2000 years ago in a language that has issues translating into English.

Wikipedia’s not being a credible source notwithstanding, grammatically, I leave the state of being described as not intoxicated once I ingest toxin. It may be such a small amount of toxin to have little to no affect on me, it I am now intoxicated nonetheless.

It seems evident that ”not given to much wine” (1 Tim. 3:8) is a Greek phrase that is simply equivalent to the single Greek word translated as ”not given to wine” (1 Tim. 3:3). The key question here is what the idea of ”given” really is. I can’t find evidence that it means total abstinence from wine. The most obvious reading is that elders and deacons should not be addicted to wine, or alcoholics in our common parlance.

Re: ~ 4:30. Please examine the truthfulness of your statement. ”A central concept of toxicology is that the effects of a toxicant are dose-dependent; even water can lead to water intoxication when taken in too high a dose, whereas for even a very toxic substance such as snake venom there is a dose below which there is no detectable toxic effect.” (Wikipedia article on toxicity)
