"The fact that God gave us an advocate, in His Son, shows that He knew sin was a probability for us, even after we are saved (1 John 2:1).

 

1 John 3:8-9, then, cannot mean that one who is saved, and commits a sin is not of God. “Commiteth” translates a present participle: meaning continual action.

One who continues in sin is not of God, but by the same token, one who is of God, and commits a sin is not any less of God.

 

The full assurance of salvation comes from a deep, deep well in the Bible.

This proves that those who say “one sin will send you to hell”, out of an attempt to scare you, are dead wrong.

 

This is no license to sin; willful sin is no “hamartia”, failure. Willful sin is a “parabaseos”; violation, literally fighting God. That’s a different situation.

But when you, a Christian, fail; sin…there is immediate forgiveness (1 John 1:7-10)."
